Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23-31
Red Ribbon Week in Crete, Oct. 23-31, was proclaimed by a vote of the City Council and signature of Mayor Roger Foster at a regular council meeting earlier this month, encouraging residents to participate in drug prevention education activities.
Crete Police Chief Hensel, in his annual presentation of the proclamation to council members, often shares the story of U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was tortured and killed by a Mexican drug cartel in 1985. Camarena had told his mother that even as one person, he wanted to make a difference.
Red ribbons became a symbol to honor Camarena and are used in National Red Ribbon Week activities reaching millions of U.S. children and families as part of the fight against the use of illegal drugs and the abuse of alcohol.
A volunteer group, Saline County Prevention Coalition C/URB - Community Against Underage Risky Behavior, supports the proclamation by taking it to the governing boards of every community in the county. Hensel, a supporting member of CURB, includes the Crete Police Department in supporting the community’s efforts of educating the public during this annual observance as well as year-round.
