Crete Community World Cup games set for this weekend

Armory Park to host pool play games Saturday; Papik Field the site for Sunday championships

Crete Community World Cup Soccer Tournament, April 9-10.

A total of 16 games are scheduled for the second Crete Community World Cup Soccer Tournament this Saturday and Sunday (April 9-10). Twleve teams will compete in women’s and men’s divisions representing local business sponsors and will be known by country names for the tournament.

The winners of A and B pools in the women's and men's divisions will play in championship games slated for 1 and 2:30 p.m., respectively, on Sunday at Doane University's  Al Papik Field, East 13th Street and Doane Drive.

Pool Play games for six women’s teams and six men’s teams will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Armory Park, 515 East 1st Street.

Women’s Teams and sponsors: Pool A - Noah’s Deli (El Salvador), G&M Agency (Mexico), D’Leon’s (Chile); Pool B - Virgina Maceo Tax Services (Cuba), Bauer Insurance (United States), Foodmart (Costa Rica). Men’s Teams: Pool A - Tienda Paraiso  (Guatemala), Carniceria San Fernando (Mexico), Crete Core Ingredients (Peru); Pool B - Saline Medical Specialties (Xela), Solheim Law Firm (United States), Kalkwarf & Smith Law Firm (Brazil).

Saturday - Armory Park

All Pool A games are at 9 a.m., 12 and 3 p.m. with all Pool B games at 10:30 a.m., 1:30, 4:30. Women’s division games will be played on the South Field, while the men’s teams will play on the North Field, all at Armory Park.

Sunday - Papik Field

Third/Fourth Place games will be played at 9 a.m. for the women’s division and 10:30 a.m. for the men.


All proceeds from the tournament will go to the Doane Equity Program, a fund to assist families in covering the cost of certain local youth programs.

Event planning includes the Community Assistance Office and Crete Parks and Recreation, and Doane University. The first version of Crete's own “World Cup” event was held in May 2019 with 13 teams in male and female divisions.
